:: ABOUT CDCS
November 27, 1996
The Center for the Development of Civil Society is the successor to the Ghevond Alishan Cultural-Educational Association. This decision was made at the annual meeting of Ghevond Alishan Cultural-Educational Association on November 27th, 1996. The motto of meeting was “NGOs must make the process of democratization irreversible”.
Since the founding of the Ghevond Alishan Cultural-Educational Association in 1988, our country has changed, we have changed, and the challenges of our country and our citizens have changed. Armenia became independent and needs to build a democratic society. The citizens and NGOs created by citizens must promote the process of building a civil society in Armenia and must make the process of democratization in Armenia irreversible.
For the last few years, due to its changing program activities the Association Ghevond Alishan Cultural-Educational Association has changed its name to the Center for the Development of Civil Society.
Today, in the process of building a civil society in Armenia, we see our role as an NGO to ensure that each Armenian citizen understands his/her rights and responsibilities and contributes to building a democratic country. At the same time, we remain strongly committed to our previous mission – to spread the Armenian language and culture, to help refugees and national minorities in the process of their cultural and psychological adaptation into society. We remain also strongly committed to our previous slogan, “Not by Bread Alone”.
We are optimistic about the eventual victory of democratic ideas in our country and the realization of the mission of our organization.
